Sea Stars Early Learning

Sea Stars Early Learning opened in May 2005, and has been a growing concern ever since!  We are located in Nanaimo, BC, on Vancouver Island.  Nanaimo is a great place for families to raise children, as there are many parks, beaches, and recreational activities geared just for families. As Child care providers, there are many of these same activities available to the children we care for.

Sea Stars is a Family Centered Practice. There are 7 full/part time spaces: 4 offered for children under 4 and three for those friends who are 4 years old.  Occasionally, we have school age children who have been with us for regular child care previously.  Over the years we have welcomed over 50 children into our home and our hearts since that first day.

Our staff are well experienced in the Childcare world: Kim has been working with children under 6 for over 25 years, having started her career in 1989 as a substitute pre school teacher in the reverse integration Preschool at the Montreal Oral School for the Deaf, while completing her degree at Concordia University.  A variety of incredible experiences led her to open Sea Stars Family Child Care in her home in 2005, when her own children were 18 months and 3 years old. Edie has been teaching preschool for almost 20 years, and continues to do so with the City of Nanaimo Parks and Rec preschool programs.  She was Kim’s daughter’s preschool teacher once upon a time! Edie is also the Mum of three boys, who are quickly growing into men and leaving the nest!

At Sea Stars, we work closely with the Nanaimo Child Development Center, so there is frequently an EA or Child Support Worker present as well.

Our Home based center has its own large playroom, art and snack area, and separate Nap area.  Our indoor play space has direct access to the outdoor play area, which is perfect because we spend lots of time outdoors (yes, even in the rainy Wet Coast weather).  We follow a Child Led/Learning through Play and High/Scope based curriculum and incorporate many RIE techniques and attributes within our program.  Our daily schedule is flexible to accommodate naps, nice weather, extended circle times or activities, trips to the park or Gym time.

Sea Stars hours of operation: 7:45am-4:45pm, Mid August through June 30th.  Sea Stars closes for the Winter Break, and for the School District 68 Spring Break.

Sea Stars provides a healthy lunch and two healthy snacks each day for the children, so parents do not need to send any food, other than formula or milk for their child.  The children drink water with their meals. Special diets do require some discussion, but typically, we are able to accommodate.  Please note that currently, Sea Stars is NOT a nut free center.
